As parents, our top priority is ensuring the safety of the products we give to our babies. One concern that has been making headlines lately is the presence of PFAS—often referred to as "forever chemicals"—in everyday items, including some baby products. If you’ve heard about these and are wondering if they’re in pacifiers, you’re not alone.
Let’s dive into what PFAS are, why they’re a concern, and how Soothe Beginnings ensures safety.
What Are PFAS and Why Are They Harmful?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals used in various products to make them resistant to water, grease, or stains. While that may sound useful, these chemicals are problematic because:
- They don’t break down easily, earning the nickname “forever chemicals.”
- Exposure to PFAS has been linked to potential health risks, including developmental issues in children.
Unfortunately, PFAS can sometimes be found in coatings or materials used in baby products. This has understandably raised concerns for parents looking for safe, toxin-free options. Many times they are intentionally ADDED. Levels of less than 100ppm are recommended to limit exposure.
Are PFAS Found in Medical-Grade Silicone?
The good news is that medical-grade silicone, like the kind used in Soothe Beginnings pacifiers, is inherently low risk for PFAS. Silicone is a non-toxic, hypoallergenic material that undergoes rigorous testing to ensure safety for babies. While not all silicones are created equal, food-grade and medical-grade silicone are specifically manufactured to avoid harmful chemicals.
Even though quality silicone itself is low risk for PFAS, I went the extra mile to have our pacifiers independently tested for these substances. Why? Because transparency and your peace of mind matter to me.
How Soothe Beginnings Ensures Safety
At Soothe Beginnings, I believe parents deserve clear answers and products they can trust. That’s why every pacifier:
-
Is third-party tested and PASS for PFAS - which is not required.
- Fluorine result: LT 50 ppm- HALF the recommended limit for exposure! An excellent result!!
- Batch testing, exceeding the industry standard of testing only once a year.
- Is designed with transparency in mind. I openly share my testing practices because I know you need to feel confident in your choices.
You can always refer to my Pacifier Safety Checklist for more information about what to look for in a truly safe pacifier.
What Can You Do as a Parent?
If you’re worried about PFAS in baby products, here are a few steps you can take:
- Check the Materials: Opt for products made from trusted materials like medical-grade silicone or certified non-toxic components.
- Look for Transparent Brands: Choose companies that openly share their testing processes and go beyond the minimum safety standards.
- Stay Informed: Resources like saferproducts.gov can provide insight into reported incidents and product safety concerns.
By staying informed and choosing carefully, you can protect your little one from unnecessary risks while feeling confident about the products you use.
A Commitment to Safety and Peace of Mind
When I created the Soothe Beginnings pacifier, it wasn’t just about designing a product that worked—it was about creating something that I, as a mom, would feel good giving to my own child. That’s why safety will always come first, and why I’ll continue to go above and beyond to ensure the highest standards.
