Flex vs. Heirloom: Which Soothe Beginnings Kit Fits You?

Both Flex and Heirloom run on the same patented swappable nipple system. Same three nipple shapes, same 0 to 18 month lifespan, same idea: one shield, nipples that change as your baby's needs change. The difference between them isn't function, it's material and price point. Here's how to know which one to start with.

What's identical between the two

Whichever one you pick, you're getting the same core system:

  • All three nipple shapes: Nursing, Standard, and Orthodontic, and the option to order three of the same shape if your baby already has a preference
  • Medical-grade silicone nipples, latex-free, BPA-free
  • Every production batch tested, not just tested once a year
  • Made in the USA
  • Built for the full 0 to 18 month range on one shield
  • Nursing and Standard shapes both pass the triangle test for a wide, deep latch

A pacifier spends roughly 3,200 hours in a baby's mouth over the time they use one. That's why both lines get held to the same testing standard regardless of price. The savings on Flex come from the shield material and finish, not from cutting corners on what touches your baby.

Where they actually differ

Shield material. Heirloom's shield is compressed recycled paper and eco-resin, hand-sanded and finished, non-porous, GREENGUARD Gold certified, and plastic-free. Flex's shield is polypropylene, BPA-free, PFAS-free, and phthalate-free. Both are safe and both pass the same testing. Heirloom is the plastic-free option; Flex is the plastic option, built to hit a lower price point without changing the nipple system that actually does the work.

Price. Flex starts at $26 for the starter kit. Heirloom starts at $50. Roughly half.

Colors. Heirloom comes in Natural, Black Diamond, and Blue Canyon, tones built for a boutique, keepsake feel. Flex comes in Birch Cream, Isla Rose, Fern Grove, and Blue Ridge, a pastel palette at a price point where grabbing an extra shield or two doesn't feel like a splurge.

Feel. Heirloom is the one people put on a baby registry or give as a shower gift, something that looks and feels like a keepsake. Flex is the one you grab because you need a pacifier that actually works and you don't want to pay boutique price to find out if your baby likes the system.

How to clean and care for each one

The nipples are handled the same way no matter which line you're using. Boil them, steam them, run them through a sterilizer bag or sterilizer, or put them in the dishwasher. They're the same medical-grade silicone either way, so cleaning doesn't change based on which shield they're attached to.

The shields are where it splits, and Heirloom actually asks less of you here. Its material is naturally antimicrobial, so it only needs a hand wash, no boiling or steaming. Flex's polypropylene shield needs the more active routine: hand wash, steam, or boil to keep it clean, since it doesn't have that built-in antimicrobial property.

Either way, the habit that matters most is the same: clean it daily, and rotate between a couple of pacifiers if you can instead of reaching for the same one over and over without a wash in between.

If you're not sure your baby will take to the system yet

Start with Flex. It's the same nipple shapes, the same testing, the same 0 to 18 month shield life, at $26 instead of $50. If it works for your baby, and it likely will, since the nipple shapes are what's doing the work, you can decide later whether you want to move up to Heirloom's finish and material for the long haul or just keep going with Flex.

If you already know you want the boutique version

Go straight to Heirloom. If you're buying for a registry, a shower gift, or you specifically want the plastic-free, hand-finished shield, there's no reason to start with Flex first. You already know what you want.

The short version

Same patent. Same three nipple shapes. Same safety testing. Flex is polypropylene at $26 and built to get families into the system affordably. Heirloom is the plastic-free, hand-finished shield at $50 for people who want the keepsake version from the start. Neither one is the "starter" version of the other, they're the same system built on two different materials for two different budgets.
